How to Prepare Your Car for Shipping
Why Preparation Matters
Properly preparing your vehicle for shipping ensures a smooth pickup and delivery process. It also helps protect your car during transit and makes the inspection process faster for both you and the carrier.
Your Pre-Shipping Checklist
1. Clean Your Vehicle Inside and Out
A clean car makes it easier to document any existing damage during the pre-transport inspection. Wash the exterior and remove clutter from the interior.
2. Remove Personal Belongings
Transport carriers are not liable for personal items left inside your vehicle. Remove all valuables, electronics, toll tags, and loose items. Most carriers allow up to 100 lbs of personal items in the trunk, but check with your broker first.
3. Document Existing Damage
Take detailed photos of your vehicle from all angles before pickup. Note any scratches, dents, or chips. This documentation is crucial if you need to file a claim.
4. Check Fluid Levels and Battery
Ensure your car has about a quarter tank of gas — enough to load and unload but not so much that it adds unnecessary weight. Check that the battery is fully charged and the car starts reliably.
5. Disable Alarms and Toll Passes
Deactivate any aftermarket alarms that could go off during transport. Remove or deactivate electronic toll passes (like E-ZPass or SunPass) to avoid phantom charges.
6. Note Mechanical Issues
If your vehicle doesn't run, is lowered, or has any special conditions, inform your broker upfront. Non-running vehicles require a winch or flatbed, which affects pricing and carrier availability.
7. Secure or Remove Accessories
Retract antennas, fold in side mirrors if possible, and remove or secure any aftermarket accessories (bike racks, spoilers, custom parts) that could be damaged or cause damage during loading.
Day of Pickup
On pickup day, be present (or have a representative present) to:
- Walk around the vehicle with the driver
- Sign the Bill of Lading (BOL)
- Hand over one set of keys
- Confirm contact information for delivery
